2010-2011 School Year Highlights

The Bridge City High School Cheerleaders attended NCA Cheer Camp in Galveston this summer. While at camp they learned cheers, chants, dances, stunts and leadership skills.  Each night they had evaluations and were awarded superior ribbons and a spirit stick. The entire Varsity squad was nominated for All-American. Out of the 13 team members nominated, Brooklyn Hogden, Lari Navarro and Hope Carr were selected as All American Cheerleaders for NCA. As a team they were awarded the Herkie Team Award.  This award is given by the NCA staff to the team that shows genuine team unity & spirit throughout the entire camp. They also received the Motion Technique Award and a Bid to NCA’s National Championship in December.  In addition to the teams overall success, Brooklyn Hogden, co-head cheerleader, was awarded the Individual Leadership Award, for showing the best leadership skills as head cheerleader throughout the camp and was asked to return and be on the NCA Staff next summer. She also received two “Pass it on Leadership Pins” while at camp. Brooklyn is the first Cheerleader from BCHS to receive all three top honors (All American Award, Individual Leadership Award and to be chosen as a NCA Staff member).

The freshmen and the JV Cheerleaders brought home Spirit Stick, Bid to Nationals, Superior ribbons, the entire team was nominated for NCA All American Cheerleader and Kristina Threatt was chosen as an All American Cheerleader. Kaitlyn Louveir received a “Pass it on” leadership pin.  Michelle Huff is the sponsor for the Freshmen, JV and Varsity Cheer Coach.

BCHS Cheerleaders; Lari Navarro, Whitney Leblanc, Sydnee Granger and Bailey Moore were chosen to attend Cheer Hawaii USA with 90 other girls from across the United States this summer. While attending this prestigious cheer camp, they learned cheers, chants, dances, collegiate stunts, and most of all leadership skills. As they worked hard to prepare their teams for showcase day Sydnee and Bailey were selected as team leaders of their groups. Whitney Leblanc came in 2ND in the jump contest. On showcase day Bailey Moore was selected out of all attendees as Cheer Hawaii’s “Best All Around” cheerleader of the camp. This camp is designed to prepare cheerleaders to cheer at the collegiate level and learn to build team unity within 10days. These young ladies also had the opportunity to tour Pearl Harbor, The Polynesian Center, The University of Hawaii, and visit many famous beaches such as Waikiki, North Shore and Kailua. Bridge City quarterback Matt Menard hits the practice field Monday for his senior season so he wrapped up his college future Friday by announcing he was going to play baseball at Baylor University. With National Signing Day not until November Menard is taking the decision off his shoulders now to allow him to concentrate on what should be an exciting season of Cardinal football. "I fell in love with the campus when I got there," he said. "The facilities are great, I'll be living just four blocks from the field, and I'm just excited about competing in the Big 12." The University of Houston was the other Texas university recruiting Menard but he liked the action of playing against teams like Texas and Texas A&M. So what if the two-sport star has another great year on the football field and someone offers him a scholarship? "I love football, but as far as longevity and playing time, I think baseball is my sport," Menard said.

Texas A&M-Kingsville head baseball coach Jason Gonzales added a big piece to the puzzle for the 2012 season when former McNeese State right-handed pitcher Jaden Dillon agreed to play for the Javelinas for his senior season. "We are extremely excited about Jaden Dillon becoming a Javelina,” said Gonzales. “This is as talented a pitcher as we have signed here in a very long time. This is a young man who has been extremely successful at the Division I level and brings a wealth of talent and experience. We could not be more pleased that he has become part of Javelina Nation." Dillon is currently pitching in the Texas Collegiate League this summer for the East Texas Pump Jacks. He leads the league with seven wins. He is 7-1 with a 2.52 ERA on the season. He leads the league with two complete games and is fifth in the league with 53.2 innings pitched. He pitched in the TCL All-Star game.

On Thursday Bridge City's Kirby Shepherd, Mary Nguyen, and Armando Chavez signed to run Cross Country at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.
The Bridge City school board has named a lone finalist for superintendent of the BC school district. Mike King is currently the Director of Federal and Special Programs of the Longview ISD.  King does have superintendent experience, serving as superintendent of the West Rusk CCISD in New London, Tx. from 2007-09.  He was the Hillsboro ISD District Consultant and K-2 Principal from the spring of 2010 to July of 2010, when he began working in Longview.  Before getting into administration, he was once the head basketball coach and asst. football coach at Kirbyville HS from 1991-95.
