The Texas Longhorns appear to be headed to the National Championship game at the Rose Bowl. And that’s what has Longhorn fans cautiously optimistic.
Even though they’ll be heavily favored in their final three games (Kansas, Texas A&M, and the Big 12 Championship) we can’t feel confident enough to make reservations for Jan. 7 because of what has happened in the past.
So all of you Aggie fans won’t hear me talking trash before the Thanksgiving game even though the Ags have given up more than 30 points in seven of their ten games. The game is also in College Station and if they figure that out they just might play the way they did against Texas Tech.
But it sure looks like this is a special Longhorn team, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Lead by our own Earl Thomas the Longhorn defense is number one in the country, giving up just 232 yards per game.
Their rushing defense gives up an average of 50 yards per game. How good is that? Alabama is second, giving up 73 yards per contest with Central Florida third at 82 ypg.
They’re number one in points allowed at only 12 per game. Clemson leads the country in interceptions with 20 and Texas has 19. They’re also one behind Ohio in turnover ratio, sitting with a plus-29.
And one statistic that you don’t hear about that is very important to their success is that they’re number one in third down efficiency.
Offensively the Horns just haven’t found the rushing attack that has made them so well known with running backs like Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson.
But through the air they have the most efficient quarterback in the country. Colt McCoy completes 72 percent of his passes and no one else is at 70 percent. And with some great targets like Jordan Shipley to throw to, they have made up the slack.
You can hear the Horns this Saturday night at 6pm on KOGT as Colt McCoy attempts to become the NCAA’s All-time winningest quarterback. Right now he’s 42-7 and tied with former Georgia QB David Greene. He’ll also be the first quarterback to have four ten-win seasons. He currently holds 45 school records including 15 career, 12 single-season, five single-game, six freshman and seven miscellaneous marks.
The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced Dec. 12.
Meantime over in Lubbock, Jacoby Franks (WOS) ranks eighth on Texas Tech’s pass happy receiving chart with 24 catches for 294 yards and a touchdown. He has the second longest pass completion on the team with a 72 yard reception.
The Raiders have Oklahoma and Baylor left on their schedule.
Only playing in eight of Tulane’s ten games because of injury, tight end Cody Sparks (BC) is fourth in receptions. The strange thing about the Green Wave is that they’ve only won three games. But it’s three games they weren’t predicted to win (McNeese, Army, and UTEP).
They have Central Florida and Southern Methodist left on their schedule.
Depauldrick Garrett (WOS) or DPG as I called him in high school, has had a heckuva season with Navarro JC. He rushed for 950 yards and 10 TD's and caught 10 passes for 150 yds. and a TD. Navarro had an undefeated regular season but lost to Blinn in the SWJCFC Championship Game 45-35. Navarro is not through as they will play in a JC Bowl game.
Seth Thomas (WOS) of McNeese leads the Cowboys in interceptions with three. Thomas and the 8-2 Cowboys are fighting for the SLC Championship this weekend against Central Arkansas.
Our high school football season came to a close a little quicker than we’re used to as West Orange-Stark, Bridge City and Vidor all lost in the bi-district round. But the biggest surprise from last week came from Brookshire-Royal upsetting Giddings in a big way.
There were some good moments from the 2009 season and in the next few weeks we’ll celebrate the stars who made the All-KOGT Team.
Basketball season is underway and already three former high school stars have already made headlines on the college court.
North Texas junior guard Brittney James (WOS) scored a team-high 17 points but NT was pummeled by SFA 81-51.
KK Little was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Murray State Classic. She scored 24 points for San Jac in a loss to Western Texas College. They also lost their second game 97-79 to LSU-E with KK scoring 17 points. Then they beat Dodge City college 80-58 and she scored 12 points.
The University of Houston opened the season with a win. Led by a 27-point effort from junior guard Brittney Scott (WOS), the Lady Cougars basketball team avoided an unlucky start to the season on Friday the 13th, defeating Gardner-Webb 86-64.
