Gnats, flies, roaches and even a bird have been a problem this summer for restaurants and food businesses, according to information from Orange County Health Inspector James Scales. He found gnats and flies at several of the 32 places he inspected during the first part of August. The bird was seen flying around the Wal-Mart in West Orange.
Scales gave seven perfect scores of 100. The rating went to Kids and Company day care at 4034 Park Avenue in Orange; First Presbyterian Day School at 412 Ninth Street in Orange; Bridge City Pizza at 2198 Texas Avenue; Da' Shak catering on Mickler Drive in Orange; The Brown Estate in Orange; Charlotte's Shaved Ice at 110 South Main Street in Vidor; and Dairy Queen at 1780 Texas Avenue in Bridge City. Scales made a pre-opening inspection at Paradise Donuts at 5648 FM 408 in Orangefield.

Sunset Grove Country Club, 2900 West Sunset Drive in Orange: 94. Gnats found in the storage room. Floors and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned.
Wal-Mart Bakery, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 94. Gnats found throughout. Floors needed to be cleaned, especially under equipment and baseboards.
Waffle House, 125 East Freeway in Vidor: 94. The front cooler was holding water and needed repairing. Storage racks and cooler racks were beginning to rust.
Elements Cafe and Bakery, 1055 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Foods inside the coolers needed to be dated. No certified food manager was on staff.
Novrozky’s, 501 North 16th Street in Orange: 92. Gnats found throughout restaurant. The floor drain and the mop sink were clogged. The motor inside the walk-in cooler was dripping water onto the floor. Storage racks were beginning to rust. Mold was found on the ceiling in the storage room. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned. Sinks were dripping water.
Snow Flake Donuts, 1402 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 91. The same pan liner for making kolaches was used multiple times. Boudain and sausage were at unsafe temperatures.
Kim’s Donut Place, 3041 Highway 12 in Vidor: 91. Sausage and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. An employee drink was inside the reach-in cooler with foods for public sale.
Noah’s Seafood Kitchen, 950 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Chicken and shrimp were left out on the counter and reached unsafe temperature. Fish and shrimp were defrosting in water in the dish sink.
Shell Food Mart, 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 90. Sandwiches in the coolers needed to be dated. A roach was found inside the compartment sink. Mold was found on drink dispensers and the slush machine needed cleaning.
Subway, 300 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Boxes of lettuce were stored on the floor of the walk-in cooler. No certified food manager on staff. Ice scoop was lying on top of ice machine and in the ice at the drive-through drink station.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 3717 North 16th Street in Orange: 90. Employee drinks were found on storage shelves. No certified food manager on staff. Floors, walls and ceiling tiles needed to be cleaned. The inside of the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.
Wal-Mart Grocery, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 90. A bird was flying around in the store. Gnats were found in the produce department. Employee drinks were found inside the meat cooler. Floors inside the milk cooler and meat cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Gaskets needed to be repaired or replaced on the milk cooler doors.
Brookshire Brothers Deli, 1380 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Hair was found in a container of cornbread. Gnats found under the drink station and four dead roaches were on stick traps behind the oven. Ceiling tiles needed to be cleaned of old dust around air vents. The ceiling inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.
Sonic Drive In, 340 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Foods inside the reach-in freezer needed to be covered. The front cooler was holding water on the bottom shelf. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods. Air vents needed to be cleaned of dust and mold. Storage racks were beginning to rust.
Market Basket Deli, 11916 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 89. Flies found throughout the deli. Cooked rice was sitting on top of the counter to cool. Floors, baseboards and storage equipment needed to be cleaned. Storage containers had broken lids.
Moz Grill/Crawdad’s, 12099 FM 1442 in Orange: 87. Flies and gnats found throughout. An employee had painted fingernails. Faucet was dripping. Floors and baseboards needed to be cleaned. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned. Mops and brooms should be hung to dry. Gnats found on wet mops.
Happy Donuts, 1081 North Main Street in Vidor: 82. Sausage, egg and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. Raw bacon was stored inside grocery bags. Foods in coolers needed to be dated. Employees using the same pan liner repeatedly for making kolaches. Food was stored on the floor. The door to the reach-in freezer was not closing. The motor in the reach-in cooler was dripping water with a pan placed to catch the water from stored raw dough and pre-made breakfast burritos. Floors, walls and equipment were “very dirty.”
