Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave perfect scores to eight of the 23 food businesses he inspected during the last part of May. Two of the 23 were pre-opening inspections for new businesses, including a Homsi's going into the former Jack in the Box at 7247 Interstate 10 east in McLewis. The perfect scores went to Old Orange Cafe; Glenda's Bake a Cake in West Orange, Dairy Queen on 16th Street in Orange, Little Cypress Baptist Church, Cardinal Dollar Express in Bridge City, Fastlane on North Main Street in Vidor, Ice Castle Concessions on North Main Street in Vidor, and Fastbreak on North Main Street in Vidor. The other new business was Charlotte's Shaved Ice on Highway 12 in Vidor. The lowest score for the period went to Church's Chicken on Texas Avenue in Bridge City with an 86. Other scores were:

Holiday Inn Express on East Freeway in Vidor: 97. Hotel did not have a certified food manager on staff.

McDonald's on 16th Street in Orange: 97. Floors in the walk-in freezer needed to be cleaned along with the floors under and behind equipment.

Snappy's Express Mart on Highway 87 in Bridge City: 97. The ceiling in the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.

Gator's Nest on Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. The area under the grill needed to be cleaned of old grease.

Domino's Pizza on North Main Street in Vidor: 97. A floor tile was broken and missing at the preparation area. The floors, especially around the baseboards, needed to be cleaned.

Luigi's Italian Grill on Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 97. Restaurant did not have a certified food manager on staff.

Best Western Plus on Courtland Street in Vidor: 94. Several gnats were found. Hotel did not have a certified food manager on staff.

Subway on MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 94. Restaurant did not have a certified food manager on staff. Storage shelves were beginning to rust and needed repair. The inside of the hand-washing sink and the compartment needed to be cleaned.

Laredo’s Mexican Restaurant on Highway 62 North: 94. Restaurant did not have a certified food manager on staff. The vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.

Texas Country Store on Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. The store name and address were needed on all bags of ice sold at the store. An ice scoop was found on top of a box in the storage room.

Super Star Food Mart on South Main Street in Vidor: 90. Deli sandwiches found with a dates. A couple of dead roaches were found inside the storage room. Thermometers were needed for the inside coolers.

Sonic Drive-In on North 16th Street in Orange: 90. Bread was found with mold. Management immediately threw it out. Flies and gnats were found throughout the restaurant. The inside equipment and the inside of the ice machine needed to be cleaned of old food and mold.

Church’s Chicken on Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 86. An employee from the convenience store on the other side of the building was found making her food inside the restaurant. An employee’s drink was found on shelves without a lid and straw. Gaskets on the reach-in cooler were held in place by tape and needed to be replaced. Storage racks with clean dishes were beginning to rust. An ice scoop was inside the ice machine. All storage equipment needed cleaning and restaurant was advised to do more daily cleaning. A used basketball was found on restaurant equipment.
