It is once again rodeo season for the Texas High School Rodeo Association. Students from all over the state of Texas compete in rodeos in their regions to try to advance to the state or even national levels. Members of the Orange County Youth Rodeo Association (OCYRA) are no exception. Members have been competing in both the Junior High and High School level since this season started in September with the get acquainted rodeo held in Japer. Orange County Youth Rodeo Association members have been competing in Region V Rodeo which is the largest region in the state and are making for some stiff competition. Cowboys and Cowgirls of the OCYRA compete in barrels, poles , girls goat tying, breakaway roping, bull riding, bareback, saddle bronc, tie down roping, steer wrestling and team roping. Junior High members also compete in team ribbon roping. Orange County members also hold the student positions of President, Vice President and Secretary for Region V. All members are held to high expectations. Members must maintain academic eligibility to participate in each rodeo.

          On Saturday, February 9th the Orange County Youth Rodeo Association will be hosting its 3rd Annual Drawdown. The drawdown is its major fundraiser for the year. It supports OCYRA Cowboys and Cowgirls in both the Junior High and High School levels. Drawdown tickets are sold and the purchaser is entitled to a ribeye steak dinner for two with all the trimmings provided by the OCYRA. Cowboys and Cowgirls will serve and wait on all ticket holders as the wait to see if they have purchased a winning ticket. Entertainment for the night will be provided by the MCs Mr. Gary Stelly of KOGT Radio and Mr. Chad Jenkins, president of the OCYRA. Every 10th number drawn throughout the night will receive a prize donated by many area businesses. It makes for a great night out. Money raised from the fundraiser will help those OCYRA members who advance to the state level of competition. Two of the OCYRA cowgirls have already competed at the Region level in the Region V Queens Contest. Keeley Gray will be representing Region V at state as Queen and Bailee Ackerman will be representing as 1st runner-up. A new addition to our club is the Shooting division. OCYRA is also helping to support its members Bradley Bilbo, Jacob Bilbo and Wyatt Neely.

          High School members include: Bailee Ackerman, Rigby Baker, Chris Bortner, Caleb Cogbill, Shaylon Elms, Keeley Gray, Tanner Jenkins, Kacie Lummus, Shellie Lummus, Scarlett Neely, Jesse Winfree and Jaycie Young.
