Dear West Orange – Cove Community and Mustang Parents,

It is with great excitement that our students and staff look forward to the end of this school year; and, as graduation approaches, I look back upon 2013-2014 with a tremendous amount of pride. The school year has been exceptional. Our students have demonstrated growth and achievement inside and outside of the classroom.

As you may recall, inclement weather during the winter resulted in West Orange – Cove cancelling classes for several days. These weather day decisions were made out of an abundance of caution for the welfare of our students and staff. Each decision was made with safety as a primary concern, rather than the resulting impact on the school calendar. Having said that, these decisions have affected the 2013-2014 calendar in such a way that WOC schools will have to utilize Memorial Day as an instructional day so that we remain in compliance with Texas Education Agency requirements.

I want to emphasize that Memorial Day is a day of great significance not only to me, but also to our employees, our community stakeholders, and our nation. Therefore, programs have been scheduled throughout the district to honor veterans.

On May 26, our youngest students at North Early Learning Center will participate in a campus Memorial Day Parade. West Orange – Stark Elementary will welcome a guest speaker during a morning program. WO-S Middle School students will gather at the flagpole to honor veterans. At the High School, a brief assembly will be held at the end of the school day.

The District recognizes that changes to the school calendar may have created inconveniences to family plans and schedules. I apologize for this rare occurrence and appreciate your understanding and flexibility. I also welcome you to honor our Nation’s veterans with us. Details of campus programs will be posted on our District website and Facebook page. Thank you once again for your continued support of West Orange – Cove CISD.
