The festival drew nearly 1,000 people on Saturday for the Autumn Fair. The winners of the scarecrow competition were announced, along with the winners for the first pumpkin pie contest. Kaycee Dortch of Shangri La said the three judges, all professional cooks, picked a clear winner for first place in the pies--'Lauren's Perfect Pie' by Lauren Jones of Groves. She said she used a traditional recipe with a few tweaks. Lauren R. Fontenot won second with Pilgrim Pumpkin Pie and Sandra Hoke won third with bourbon pumpkin pie with streusel topping. The winning recipes will be available soon on the Shangri La webpage. The winners were given pie servers tied with ribbon. The judges were Lucy Terry of Lucy's Cafe, David Claybar of Old Orange Cafe, and Monica Cobb, a private chef from Beaumont. More than 150 scarecrows were entered in the contest this year. The winners are chosen by popular vote of the visitors, except for special director's awards. This year the categories were expanded to include Chemical Row and several of the industrial plants designed and displayed scarecrows. Shangri La Director Michael Hoke said the director's awards included consideration of popular votes along with other criteria. He said the Shangri La staff and volunteers work weeks in their spare time making scarecrows, but can't win the popular vote. He said they needed some special recognition.
