BC School Highlights 2008-09

Kevin Angelle, a junior lefthander from Lamar, was taken in the 32nd round by the Phillies.  The Bridge City native was also excited about the opportunity.  "You have to be happy about being selected by the World Champs," Angelle said.  He'll be heading to Clearwater, Florida on Sunday but at the time of the interview was too busy preparing to know anything about his team.  The Clearwater Threshers are a Class A team in the Florida State League that are currently 28-28.  He would've been pitching with Doug Drabek's son Kyle who was a first round pick from The Woodlands, but he just got called up to Double A Reading after making the FSL All-Star Team.  Angelle was also drafted out of high school in 2006 but decided to go to college.  He pitched for San Jac for two years before coming to Lamar this season.  "I wasn't happy with the way I was pitching at the beginning of the season," he said.  "The coaches kept wanting me to change the way I throw and I kept losing velocity.  But I went back to the way I've always thrown and the scouts saw me at the conference tournament when I pitched against UTA.  I wasn't going to let a second chance of being drafted go by."  He was 3-2 in 11 appearances with a 6.59 ERA and 39 K's in 28.2 innings.  Angelle will also be leaving his baby girl Paisley but says she's planning on coming to Florida later.  "It'll be tough at first but I'm getting a webcam for my computer so I can see her."

Grant Encalade and Sharon Wilson were named Mr and Miss BCHS while Debbie Gregg was voted Teacher of the year.

BC skipper Chad Landry pleads his case while trainer Gene McKinley tends to the bloody mouth of SH 2B Brandon Arden
After an emotional Game Two win, Game Three started with the benches clearing, but no punches, in the first inning after BC's Joe Robertson creamed Panther second baseman Brandon Arden as he ran from first to second while Arden was trying to field a ground ball hit by Matt Hicks.  The umpire felt that the force of the hit and Robertson's reaction was worthy of an ejection which changed the complexity of the game.  Spring Hill won Game Three 12-6 and will move on to face Carthage who swept Taylor.
Game Two (Saturday) - Caleb Kellogg celebrates after a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the seventh to clear the bases and give BC a 6-5 win and send the series to a GAME THREE on KOGT!

Game One (Thursday) -Spring Hill scored in the bottom of the 10th to beat BC 8-7 in Game One of the best of three series at Lufkin Hudson.  Game Two is Saturday at 2pm at Hudson with Game Three to follow if necessary.  KOGT will carry the game live.

Game One Summary- The Hicks/Methvin pitching match up that was expected did not happen as Spring Hill started Jake Fudge and pulled him for Zach Zelinger in the third when BC rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie it at three.  Hicks pitched one hit ball in the 3-4-5 innings, including striking out the side in order in the fourth.  It got wild in the 6th when the Cards scored 4 runs to take a commanding 7-3 lead.  Caleb Kellogg and Eric Matthews providing the two-run hits.  But SH responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th as the bottom of their order got four straight hits, including a triple by Fudge who got some help when the ball took a right turn after it hit the wall.  Tied at seven, it was zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the 10th when the Panthers singled in their first two at bats.  A bunt laid down by second baseman Brandon Arden was fielded by Hicks who thought of getting the runner going to third before throwing it away at first base allowing the run to score for an 8-7 victory.  Hicks struck out nine and walked 2 while throwing just over 130 pitches.  Methvin, the Panthers star left hander did come into the game in the seventh and pitched four innings (no runs, a bunt and 2 singles, 2 walks) which will leave the Cards guessing of whether he'll start Game Two on Saturday.  BC left 13 on base and had four thrown out at the plate.

Bridge City had hired Teresa Thibodeaux as its new softball coach. She's from Sulphur and played college ball at McNeese.  But she later turned down the job before signing her contract.

Chad Landry is the new head baseball coach at Bridge City High School.  Landry spent five years as head coach of Hamshire-Fannett, making the playoffs in three of those years.  "We're real happy to have Chad," said BC Athletic Director Cris Stump.  "He's a motivator and he works well with kids."  BC Superintendent Dr. Jamey Harrison echoed those comments.  "He was real impressive in his interview and he made no bones about how excited he would be if he came to Bridge City."  Landry said he is excited about the new challenge and also thanked the H-F community for their support.  "It's really hard leaving those kids.  You get to know them from the 7th grade so it's real personable there.  The parents were supportive and always got us what we needed."  The search for a new coach has been a long one clouded with stories and rumors.  Emerick Jagneaux turned the job down after taking the Deer Park job.  Kyle Green of Vidor was supposedly offered the job and turned it down.  Harrison said, "Green was a consideration but at the same time we were talking to Chad.  Chad was not our third choice because we had never officially offered the job to Kyle."  Landry responded, "I don't care where I was on the list. I'm just happy to be given the opportunity."  He was so excited that he doesn't even know what his other duties are yet.  Obviously he'll coach football but doesn't know at what level.  Landry graduated from Nederland in 1997 before playing at Seminole JC and Texas Tech.  He and his wife Mandi are expecting the first child, a boy, in August.

Softball Coach Sophia Mount announced her resignation following a two year stay.  Mount made the playoffs in both seasons with the Lady Cards. She will be teaching at a junior high in her home state of Louisiana and attending college classes to work on a career in administration.

The rumors turned into reality as Billy Bryant was relieved of his duties as Head Baseball Coach at Bridge City High School after five seasons.  Superintendent Jamey Harrison said the reassignment had nothing to do with wins and losses.  Bryant made the playoffs all five seasons and twice took the Redbirds to the State Tournament, losing in the semifinals.  Harrison said the job has been posted and expects a large list of qualified candidates to apply for a chance to take over a talented 2009 squad.

The BC softball team won district again but their win streak was stopped at 89 games by Kirbyville. Their star pitcher quit just before the playoffs started and it was another quick exit in the playoffs (losing to Needville 11-3) and an exit by another coach. Sophia Mount resigned after two seasons.  They ended the season 18-6.

The Cardinal baseball team also won another district title and after a first round bye defeated Needville in three games. They would meet Jasper in a jam packed stadium in Nederland and lose a one game playoff 5-1.
