On July 11, 2009, twenty Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Alumni traveled from four different states to Arkadelphia, AR., to have a surprise reunion with their former Band Director, Richard Keyton. The reunion was the brainchild of Ken Hurst, a 1973 LCM grad. Keyton served as Band Director at LCM from 1968-1976 and later retired with his family in Arkansas. He and his wife, Cindy, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The surprise reunion came off without a hitch for the director who claims he knew nothing about it until he came to his front door and found twenty adults on his front lawn playing the LCM fight song on kazoos and drums. After surprising Keyton, the alumni spent several hours sharing memories of their band years with "Mr. Keyton" and bringing each other up to date on their present lives. The alumni also listened attentively as the director shared memories of his former students.  Pictured are: (front) Roxie (Lexa) McMillan, Marianne (Vardaman) Jackson, Tomi Sue (Lexa) Gray, James Broussard, Candi (Brock) McKim, Kay (Powell) Southerland. 2008-2009 School Highlights

McNeese shortstop Shon Landry was selected in the 31st round Thursday by the Texas Rangers.  Landry drove himself crazy listening to the online draft and stopped listening and went to the batting cage when he got the call from his mom.  "The whole family is excited," he said.  "I didn't know what was going to happen and I hadn't heard much from any of the teams since my injury."  Landry broke his collarbone with just 15 games left in the season after crashing into a wall but his numbers were still good enough to land him on the All-SLC first team.  He will fly out to Spokane, Wash. on Tuesday to begin a short season of Low A ball.  He says depending on his play he will move on to the "extended season" or come home and begin working out for next season.  "I just wanted the opportunity.  That's all I've asked for.  I've proved myself at the high school and college level and hope to do the same for the Rangers.  I love this game and wouldn't want to be doing anything else right now."  The injury kept Landry from setting several records with the Cowboys but the 2004 LCM grad said he enjoyed his time in Lake Charles.  "I've gone through several coaching changes and as a team we didn't see a lot of success, but it's helped me grow as a player and a person.  I appreciate McNeese giving me the opportunity to stay close to home and play ball."  Landry, who graduated with a degree in General Studies with a minor in Psychology, wasn't the only Cowboy selected.  Catcher Taylor Freeman (Carney, Okl) was taken in the eighth round by the Mets.  Landry suffered an injury in his first month of play in the minors and decided against surgery and retired.

Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year were announced at the LCMCISD’s annual Recognition Celebration. Cathy Kimbrow (left) was named Secondary and Angela Bagwell was named Elementary Teachers of the Year. Kimbrow teaches at Little Cypress Junior High and Bagwell at Mauriceville Elementary. Other Campus Teachers of the Year are: Jeff Collier – LCM High School; Betty Martin – Mauriceville Middle School; Marilyn Ball – Little Cypress intermediate; and Debbie Bean – Little Cypress Elementary. Other Employees of the Year were: Ramona Lyden – Child Nutrition and Louis Roach – Maintenance. Annually, each campus selects a Teacher of the Year, who is then submitted to the District for selection as the District representative. The District winners are selected by a three person panel from outside the LCM District, who receive blind copies of the application so that judges do not know the names of those submitting the applications. Those chosen then submit their information to the Region V Education Service Center for the regional round of competition.

During the June meeting of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD Board of Trustees, held Monday evening, June 8, one new member and two incumbents were administered the oath of office by the District’s attorney, Alan Sanders. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Student Council was successful in a bid for 2009-2010 Vice-President of the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) at the Annual Conference earlier this week. The LCM delegation presented their platform and campaigned before 4,300 students from across the state of Texas, the largest attendance in conference history and larger even than the National and World conventions. Several criteria had to be met for the school to even qualify to run for office, including a platform and a skit that included the entire Student Council. Although the school’s Student Council runs for office as a group, one person is the voice of the school at convention and will be the representative for LCM on the TASC Board of Directors in the vice-president role. This student is junior, Kolby Flowers. According to Flowers, “It was an amazing experience to run for Vice President, and I am looking forward to serving the students of the State of Texas. However, I could not be in this position without the hard work and dedication of my fellow student council members. It is an honor to represent my family and my school, but most importantly it is an honor to represent my student council sponsor, Stacey Smith. She is a remarkable leader and without her we would have never have come close to winning this election. I thank her for not only believing in me to represent LCM, but I thank her for her countless hours of dedication and hard work that she has put in to go above and beyond what we thought possible.” Top Row from left: Stephen Green, Allison Walker, Destiny Arteaga, Caroline Armstrong, Taylor Pousson, and Erich Reimers. Middle Row: Kolby Flowers, Kathryn Blackwell, Madison Ham, Cassandra Hug, Rachel Ford, Katelyn Peasely, Tayler Thompson, and Andre’ Robinson. Bottom Row: Stacey Smith (sponsor), Sarah Moerbe, Yoonhwi Cho, Emily Hughes, Demetrielle Washington, Bailey Gilbeaux, and Abby Gilliam.

LCM CISD Honor Roll for the 4th Six Weeks

Both Thompson's piece, "I'm Fallin' for Ya," and Anderson's piece, "Rocky," won gold medals with Anderson winning a Glassell Art Academy summer workshop scholarship. Ms. Betsy Kaufman is their teacher. Ms. Kaufman also won a Glassell Art Academy teacher's workshop scholarship.

Coach Malone stands between LCM powerlifters Maygan Crosslin and Maegan Fontenot after their performances at the state meet.  Fontenot repeated as state champ with a state record in the bench press with 190 lbs and tied another record deadlifting 360 lbs. Fontenot finished her day with a total lift weight of 875 lbs. Crosslin a freshman and newcomer to the powerlifting scene held her own against veteran lifters and came away with a fourth place finish with a total weight of 795 lbs.

LCM freshman Maygan Crosslin moves on to the state powerlifting meet at Corpus Christi Bank of America Building on March 20 by placing 1st in her weight class at the Region IV meet held in Palacios on March 12. Maygan has placed 1st in her weight class at all regular season meets and also placed 1st at West Brooks Regional qualifiers where she also received an Outstanding Lifter Award. Defending champ Megan Fontenot also won her division and was named outstanding lifter.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville District has implemented a new program called “Family Access,” which gives parents the ability to view their children’s educational records on line.  The new web-based service allows parents/guardians to view attendance records, grades, schedules, food service account balances, discipline issues, report cards and more, with a simple “point and click.” more

Scott Wells, who was born and raised in Orange and graduated from LCM, has been named the new athletic director and head football coach at 3A Commerce High School. Commerce was 1-9 a year ago. Wells has been the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Springtown (4A), who went to the playoffs last season. Wells began his career at Winnsboro High School in 1992 as the DC. From Winnsboro, he became an assistant coach at LCM and after two years, he joined Orangefield as assistant head football coach. In 2001, he went to Sulphur Springs High School for three years and then to Abilene Cooper before landing in Springtown. Wells was chosen from a list of 104 applicants.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD announces a point and click solution for parents to stay informed. On Feb. 16, the District will implement a new web-based service that will allow parents/guardians to view attendance records, grades, schedules, food service account balances, discipline issues, report cards and more with a simple “point and click.” more

Randy Crouch was introduced as the new Athletic Director / Head Football Coach at Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Feb. 9.  Crouch has been the offensive coordinator at WOS since 1998. His successes in those positions have included undefeated seasons in 1998, 2000, 2005, 2006, and 2008; district championships in 1998, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008; and a state final game in 2000. Crouch’s high school career has also included time at LCM High School as offensive coordinator from 1994 to 1997, when the team was District Runner-Up in 1995 and reached Regional Finals in 1997 – the highest level of play in the team’s history. He was head football coach at Sulphur High School from 1988 to 1990; head football coach at DeQuincy High School from 1987 to 1988; assistant line coach at Sulphur High School in 1976; and was named a high school All-American Football Player in 1971, while playing for Sulphur High School. Read more in Airplay.

Where Are They Now?
While LCM continues its search for a new Athletic Director / Football Coach, we look back at the 1992 football staff that has gone on to have much success.  Starting top left:  Scott Surratt just won a state title at Carthage; longtime trainer Mike Gray has retired; Jeff Mathews took over a dormant Vidor program in 1999 and led them to their first playoff berth since 1978; Barry Norton won a state title at Texas High and is ranked in the top ten every year; Jeff Harrell is a top asst. at Texas High.  Bottom left:  Jason Harris is now the asst. principal at Carthage; former head coach Rhodney Russell is an asst. at 5A Garland Sachse High; David Williams is currently not coaching but succeeded Russell and led the Bears to their first undefeated season and three playoff appearances, including their last in 1997; Greg Bergeron is the girls head soccer coach at 5A Highland Park.
Moody Blues

Dec. 4- Todd Moody has been reassigned as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at LCM.  According to the school he asked to be reassigned so that they could start the search for another coach.  In four seasons he was 8-28, including an 0-8 record this season.  He will become an administrative assistant working with the athletic budget, as well as an attendance officer.

While most high school students in Orange were getting ready for the Thanksgiving Holiday, one Little Cypress-Mauriceville Junior was preparing to lift her way into a world record. Maegan Fontenot, who last year as a sophomore broke the previous State “Squat” record in the Light Platform Class with a 320 pound lift and the State “Total” lift record of 715 pounds with an impressive 760 pounds, has broken the American and World records for the 114 pound class with a 330 pound squat. Since the petite LCM cheerleader weighed in for the competition at 110 pounds, that means she lifted three times her body weight. The meet was held in West Palm Beach, Florida and while she broke records with her squat, she was not able to complete the bench lifts. “Even though I didn't get to finish the meet, I still had a lot of fun and met people from all over the world,” said Maegan. “Winning is easy; it's harder to lose, is the lesson I learned. I didn't give up easy and even though it was a disappointment not to be able to finish the meet, I still walked away with more than I would have with a gold medal. I met a lot of great people, and learned a lot about myself.”

Four Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School volleyball players have been honored by the Texas Girls Coaching Association. Shayna Sheppard, Carly Gauthier, and Maci Wilcox were each named to the Academic All-State Volleyball team. Teammate Christine Sicktich was named to the First Team All- State Volleyball team. The girls will be recognized at 6:30 p.m. at the December 8 Board of Trustees meeting in the Education Center across from the LCM Administration Building. Above from left – Coach Vicki Castino, Carly Gauthier, Christine Sicktich, Maci Wilcox, Shayna Sheppard, and principal, Dr. Terri Estes.

Other candidates for king were JJ Dubose; Stefan Leger; Gary Hooker; Lyndon Stephenson; and Jordan Walker. Those vying for queen were Taylor Thompson; Katy Harrell; Shelby Harmon; Carly Gauthier; and Allison Floyd. Little Cypress-Mauriceville Superintendent Pauline Hargrove has had a few days to get reaction as to the reason the $40 million bond  issue failed on May 10 by 110 votes.  Hargrove said, “The economy seems to be the number one reason.  People have been supportive of the district’s needs but they also have their own situations to take care of.”  A KOGT.com poll agrees with 30% of the voters saying they didn’t want higher taxes and another 15% saying that the Orange annexation of Little Cypress and the taxes that come with it were also a factor.  There was also a group of voters who voted against it because they felt the junior high needed more attention than the high school.  Hargrove said the committee was certainly aware of the junior high needs but that the high school is the hub of the district and the needs were more expensive.  She added that when you look at the outside of the school it looks fine but that many repairs are needed from the inside out.  So when will the bond issue be brought up again?  Hargrove said, “If it were up to me I would start now because the need is still there. The next time we could bring it to the voters is November but the economy is expected to be worse then than it is now.  The committee is going to meet and assess our options.”

The first report sent back to Orange on Saturday from Coach Brian Waguespack, was that Maegan had broken the previous “Squat” record in the Light Platform Class with a 320 pound lift. By the end of the day she had broken the previous “Total” State record of 715 pounds with her 760 pound “Total.” She was named “Outstanding Lifter” for the light platform, and won in all classes from 1-A to 5-A.

A change in venue for the 2008 Commencement ceremonies for Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School was approved by the Board of Trustees during the December Board meeting. “Moving graduation from the football stadium has been considered for several years,” said Dr. Jim Armstrong, principal at LCM High School. “Because of size limitations, some families have to sit on the visitors’ side and view the entire ceremony from the back. If it rains, graduation is moved to the gym, and students have a limited number of tickets for that seating. Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD has received the District and individual campus accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency. Requirements for a school to be considered “Recognized” have progressively increased since the system was instituted in 2003, with the first ratings being assigned in 2004. The standard increased from 75% for the 2005 – 2006 school year to 80% for the 2006 – 2007 year, making it even more difficult to maintain much less improve campus and district ratings. However, LCM has continued to improve student scores and campus ratings. For example, there was a 4% improvement in math scores for all students, with African-American students and economically disadvantaged students improving 7% and 6% respectively. Both Little Cypress Elementary and Little Cypress Intermediate improved their campus rating. This year’s ratings by campus are: Little Cypress Elementary – Exemplary; Little Cypress Intermediate and Mauriceville Middle Schools – Recognized; and Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, Little Cypress Junior High and Mauriceville Elementary – Academically Acceptable. The District’s overall rating is Academically Acceptable.
